Marginal Intelligences. Glosses as places of creativity and difference

Back to activities
- | Bologna

In recent years there has been a growing interest in marginal writings (marginal or interlinear glosses, annotations, rubrics), which have given rise to several research initiatives. The glosses and marginal annotations constitute a complex world, specific to cultures that have manuscripts as a decisive element of intellectual communication. This complexity corresponds to different functions. The Bologna meeting aims to enhance and study a particular typology of interventions on the margins, i.e. those that document a creative, innovative or alternative need in relation to the accompanying text. It is a differentiation that can take place at various levels and can be of various kinds, whether arising from finding a new source or the need to contest historical information or recalculate a mathematical value: in any case an application of intelligence.
