Who we are The Academy was established by Royal Charter in 1969, and is one of Australia’s four Learned Academies. We are an independent, not-for-profit organisation with an over 600-strong Fellowship of leaders and experts in the study of human cultures, beliefs, values, experiences and expressions.

What we do We are the national body for the humanities in Australia. We provide independent expert advice on the humanities, inform policy development and encourage and support engagement across the sector. We promote excellence in the humanities through annual events and workshops, and invest in the future through grants and awards.

How we work The Academy is governed by an 11-member Council and supported by a Secretariat based in Canberra. We work with our Fellowship to promote excellence in the humanities across schools, university, industry and public life. Multidisciplinary collaboration We embrace new and emerging fields in the humanities, such as the digital humanities and the environmental humanities, and promote the role of the humanities in collaboration with the sciences and social sciences.

Acknowledgment of Country The Academy acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional custodians of the land and recognises the significance of research that furthers understanding of their cultures, past and present.
